Sports has always been a technology driver. Innovations are a part of the industry and advance the actual disciplines as well as the possibilities of reporting on them.
To stay connected and keep up to speed with all these exciting opportunities, SVG, the association for sports production professionals, delivers a series of events throughout the year. It culminates in the annual SVG summit, where the who is who of the industry meet.
Fraunhofer IIS is excited to join this year’s SVG summit in New York on December 16-17 to show how their MPEG-H Audio system can take sports reporting to the next level. Everyone has their own preference what they want to hear while watching their team: A favourite commentator, crowd sounds, a more classic mix, or even listening in on the team radio – all that becomes possible with the most advanced audio codec on the market. Delivering this kind of customizable experience can give a crucial edge to streaming providers and broadcasters.
At their booth #200, Fraunhofer IIS will demonstrate the advantages of MPEG-H Audio with a live streaming setup that uses content from major sporting events with immersive and personalized sound, 4K and HDR video. The demo includes production, authoring, encoding, streaming, and playback. It runs on one of the first LG TVs with MPEG-H Audio support and a Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar that is alreadly available for consumers.
Brazil is at the global vanguard of broadcast technology with their new standard TV3.0 (DTV+), which is modeled on the ATSC 3.0 standard used in the United States and South Korea, and will soon be rolled out under the name DTV+. MPEG-H Audio is its only mandatory audio system. Currently, device manufacturers are implementing the technology, and the country’s leading broadcasters are already delivering content in MPEG-H Audio 24/7. Among them is Globo, Latin Americas largest media group.
Yannik Grewe, Senior Engineer at Fraunhofer IIS, will present a Case Study during the Live Production Workshop on Monday, Dec 16 at 11.30. Together with Carlos Cosme of Globo he shows how the broadcaster delivered this year’s Olympic Games as an immersive, customizable experience. They will focus on how Globo, together with its partners, showcased seamless interoperability of TV 3.0 components, highlighting substantial improvements in service quality. Attendees will gain insights into the collaborative efforts between device manufacturers, technology vendors, and broadcasters that enable this transformative journey towards a new live sports experience.
