The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, primary developer of the MPEG-H Audio system, and Amlogic, a leading global fabless semiconductor company, announced a strategic partnership to support MPEG-H Audio across Amlogic’s range of SoC platforms today.
Amlogic and Fraunhofer IIS are working closely together to integrate the most advanced capabilities of the MPEG-H Audio system into Amlogic’s system-on-chip (SoC) platforms in alignment with Brazil’s DTV+ (TV 3.0) broadcast standard. Together, they support the rollout of Brazil’s DTV+ specification, which includes requirements for MPEG-H Audio, VVC, and LCEVC. This enables advanced audio features, reinforcing the growing industry interest in next-generation media experiences.
As a result of the cooperation, the recently released Amlogic smart STB SoC S905X5, smart TV SoCs T963D5 and T966D5 already meets all mandatory criteria outlined in the Brazilian DTV+ receiver specification. It supports MPEG-H Audio’s key features: decoding, user interactivity, and HDMI passthrough. These capabilities are essential for broadcasters and device manufacturers preparing for the next phase of digital television in Brazil.
“MPEG-H Audio brings powerful capabilities to our SoC platforms,” said James Xie, Senior Vice President of Corporate Business Strategy at Amlogic. “Through this partnership with Fraunhofer IIS, we’re enabling our customers to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving audio-visual landscape, especially in key markets like Brazil.”
Alongside the broadcast applications, Amlogic’s SoC platforms have long supported MPEG-H Audio for streaming services and 360 Reality Audio music services. This makes the platform suitable for compact streaming devices, which continue to gain popularity due to their convenience and performance, and enable video streaming providers to offer an enhanced sound experience to more viewers.
“We are pleased to partner with Amlogic to accelerate the global deployment of MPEG-H Audio,” said Martin Dietz, Director of the Audio and Media Technologies Division at Fraunhofer IIS. “This partnership ensures manufacturers and service providers can deliver personalized sound experiences across both broadcast and streaming ecosystems.”
MPEG-H Audio enables features like object-based sound and user-controlled audio profiles, which are becoming standard expectations in modern broadcast and streaming environments. By supporting MPEG-H Audio across its SoC lineup, Amlogic is helping to ensure compatibility with emerging standards and user expectations.
