South Korea’s UHD Transition Pioneers MPEG-H Audio
South Korea became the first country in the world to launch regular terrestrial UHD TV broadcasting with immersive and interactive audio using MPEG-H Audio in May 2017. This milestone marked the global debut of a Next Generation Audio system operating 24/7. The service began in the Seoul capital area and expanded nationwide by 2020, setting a benchmark for future broadcasting systems. MPEG-H Audio was selected as the mandatory audio system for South Korea’s UHD TV services. Major broadcasters such as KBS and SBS integrated the system into their workflows, with SBS highlighting that the audio innovations were even more impactful than the 4K video itself.

The rollout was supported by extensive collaboration between Korean broadcasters and international technology partners. Demonstrations at major industry events like KOBA showcased the capabilities of MPEG-H Audio to thousands of visitors, reinforcing its role in shaping the future of television in South Korea. Another milestone was reached when the country’s leading broadcaster SBS offered football fans an unprecedented level of audio personalization with a groundbreaking streaming service powered by MPEG-H Audio that was released for the Football World Cup 2022. Through the SBS mobile app, users could customize their listening experience by choosing from presets like “Enhanced Dialogue” for clearer commentary or “Site” for pure stadium atmosphere without any narration. This allowed viewers to immerse themselves in the game in a way that best suited their preferences, whether they wanted excitement, clarity, or authenticity. The app marks the first time the innovative MPEG-H Audio features were made available in a live sports streaming service, transforming the way fans experience major events. The service reflects the shared commitment of SBS and Fraunhofer IIS to delivering richer, more flexible viewing experiences.
South Korea’s early and comprehensive adoption of MPEG-H Audio and UHD broadcasting has positioned it as a global leader in next-generation television. Its pioneering efforts continue to influence international standards and serve as a model for immersive and personalized media experiences.
